Cohort Information

2022-2024 Mathematics Certificate Program (MSIS K-7) Cohort or (MFIS 7-12)

Register your interest to participate in a new math cohort either MSIS (K-8) or MFIS (7-12) facilitated by Erma Anderson starting in the Fall of 2022 as a pre-conference on Nov. 2-3 at the Annual Conference in Rome; and will continue with face-to-face sessions, finalizing in Spring of 2024.

Mathematics Specialist in International Schools (MSIS K-7) is a 2-year certificate program designed for K-7 classroom teachers of mathematics. The program is a cohort program focusing on mathematics content specific to the K-8 AERO Mathematics Standards. The design of the program is a coherent sequence of four 3 day institutes designed to enhance teacher understanding of the mathematics, how students learn mathematics, and how to determine evidence of student understanding of mathematics.

Mathematics Fellows in International Schools (MFIS 7-12) is a 2-year certificate program designed for classroom teachers of mathematics, Grades 7-12. The program is a cohort sequence of 5 institutes designed to enhance teachers’ understanding of the AERO Mathematics progressions and how to use the mathematical practices to bring order and logic to the content they teach.


  • Nov. 2-3, 2022 pre-conference in Rome.

  • Spring 2023  (dates and host school TBD) 3 days.

  • Fall 2023, 2-day pre-conference at the annual conference 2023.

  • Spring 2024 (dates and host school TBD) 3 days.

  • Spring 2024 (dates and host school TBD) 3 days. (MFIS only)



  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution

  • A valid Education Teaching license

  • Currently teaching mathematics, K-7, in an international school

  • A letter of recommendation from a current school administrator



Tuition per institute per participant is:

  • AOS Assisted Schools Member participants: $200

  • Member participants: $300

  • Non-member schools: $500


Registration includes transportation to/from the conference hotel and host school. Coffee, snacks, and lunches are also provided.

Erma Anderson is a former high mathematics and physics teacher and Albert Einstein Distinguished Fellow of the United States Senate. She was a Senior Program Officer with the Research Council assisting in the development of the National Science Education Standards and McAuliff Fellow with the National Foundation for Improvement of Education. She was a consultant with the Council for Basic Educations Schools Around the World Project, developing and implementing a protocol and series of professional development experiences that used student work to enhance the teaching and learning of mathematics and science. More recently she has been a consultant with international schools and the AERO project
