"The Art of Teaching Grammar While Teaching Writing"

Presented by Dr. Mary Ehrenworth

Hosted by the American School of Madrid

Conference Schedule
Resources- Materials/Handouts

Knowledge of grammar can illuminate meaning, it can add to voice, and it can give access to power. Teachers, though, face three big challenges: getting kids to care about grammar; finding the time in their day to teach it; and innovating pedagogy. In this class we’ll experiment with three essential methods for grammar instruction. We’ll practice these methods, we’ll work on creating strategic demonstration texts, and we’ll mine mentor texts for us in our classrooms. We’ll also examine the relationship of grammar instruction to the rest of your writing curriculum, so that you can tuck this teaching into work you are already doing. Come prepared to rediscover the beauty, art, and accessibility of the English language at the sentence level!

Participants, we’ll look at literary and nonfiction texts that we might use in a classroom to study the author’s grammatical choices – so you might bring a picture book, a short story, a poem, a favorite science or social studies text – anything that when you look at it with the lens of conventions and grammar, becomes interesting.
