| 1 | MAIS Writing & Literacy Mini Conference in Madrid: February 25, 2010.
Overview of Keynote Address and Writing Workshops
Morning Session--(2 hours) 9:00-11:00 "Introduction to Writing Workshop" (with a 15-minute break around 9:50)
- Orient teachers with the basic "nuts & bolts" of how to include writing in any classroom
- Highlight "components of a workshop"--including mini-lessons, teacher modeling, individual conferences
- Simulate a "real writing workshop" for teachers, including having teachers write & experience conferences
- Touch on "units of study" and how to organize them throughout the year depending on subject area
Afternoon Sessions--(1 hour each):
- Session One (1 hour): "Writing About Reading" (High School)
- This will address more non-traditional ways to have teachers teach students to write about reading--stemming from the innovative work of REAL writers who write about reading in essays for current periodicals (like The Nation and The Washington Post) and writers who write involve "new literacies" and engage in on-line about their reading.
- This will focus on personal essays, marginalia writing, commonplace books, and on-line book discussion groups.
- Session Two (1 hour): "Persuasive Writing" (Upper Elementary through High School)
- This workshop will unpack a unit of study in persuasive writing. It will highlight immersion in the genre, unpacking the craft of the genre, modeling, brainstorming ideas, drafting, revising for structure & craft, and editing in order to publish.
Sessions end at 4pm |
